Each state has a state university that supports the counties of that state with an Agricultural Extension Agent. These universities have web sites that support the farmers/gardeners of their state. These web sites have tons of fact sheets and help for gardeners of each state. There are maps on the internet as well that can help you find your gardening "zone" which will help you learn what you need to do each month for gardening. The Agricultural Extension Agent in your county will help you get soil tests, take gardening classes, and provide other information that can be helpful to gardeners. Many states have gardening "clubs"-some for specific plants, others just for gardeners-you can look these up. Youtube has lots of gardeners sharing their expertise for their areas. Libraries have lots of gardening books to help you get started.
Some folks think they don't have room to garden. Even when I lived in an apartment, I grew lettuce in my sunny window. If you have a balcony or a patio, you can grow individual plants of say-tomatoes or peppers or something you love to eat in a flower pot. Gardening is not as some billionaire once said: digging a hole and dropping in a seed. It does take practice. The bad news is that every year, wherever you live, the weather is a little bit different and it will be different from the year before. There are plants that will grow in the sun and some that will grow in the shade. Some can grow in the cold months and some plants love only the warm months. You can find out what grows well in your area by checking with your Extension Agent or looking it up in a book or on the internet. Gardening is as much an art as a science and you need to practice BEFORE your life depends on it. Gardening will lead to food preservation, fermentation, maybe even cooking and baking. It will help you improve your soil so you can grow herbs and medicinal plants that can help with your health or first aid.
It is a great skill and there is no time like NOW for you to try to grow something. My husband had never had a garden before. So I started him with potatoes because I thought they would be easy. The deer ate all the green parts of the plants...so you will learn to deal with your wildlife, too. Gardening is a wonderful adventure for anyone including your children. Little did I know that my parents were just trying to keep me out of their acre size garden when they helped me plant my little "salad" garden by the back door when we lived in Delaware.
