Hey folks. Wanted to post a quick thread on how to make your own butter. It takes about 10 minutes with little effort. I just made a bit of it yesterday and figured I'd post while everything is still fresh in my mind. Here's what you need:
Small clean jelly or pickle jar Pint of whipping cream Pinch of sea salt
Pour whipping cream in jar to about half full and add a pinch of sea salt (fine or powdered works best) and seal firmly. Shake vigorously. You will notice it goes from sloshing to a full and fluffy feel, but just keep shaking. After a few minutes you will begin to see clear patches of glass inside. Keep shaking, as after a few minutes the sloshing will return. This is when the elements from the cream begin to break free . Keep shaking until it feels like a lump of dough is inside. Open jar and drain off the milk/water and recap. Shake for a minute and re-drain. Do this until the liquid is drained off. You now have a lump of pure natural butter.
Things to keep in mind is that if you use store bought whipping cream, more than likely you will retain some of the preservatives. If you know a dairy farmer who can provide you with fresh cream, it is the best. As with storebought butter, homemade butter does not keep as long so I only make small amounts at a time. Homemade butter is far superior to margarine since that is made of whipped oil. You may also want to include a pinch of sugar or honey if it suits your taste.
Happy buttering!
